The Banking Executive Magazine - June 2025 Issue
ISSUE 198 JUNE 2025 the BANKING EXECUTIVE 1 Editorial ADAPTING STRATEGY AMID EVOLVING CAPITAL, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND INTERNATIONAL DYNAMICS In today’s rapidly shifting global landscape, traditional models of stability are being upended by three structural forces: evolving capital flows, divergent demographic trends, and intensifying ideological polarization. These forces are reshaping economic relationships, investment patterns, and strategic decision-making across all markets The dominance of the U.S. capital markets remains unmatched, attracting the lion’s share of private investment despite geopolitical tensions. Yet, global debt has reached historic highs—237% of world GDP—raising legitimate concerns about systemic vulnerabilities, especially with shadow banking now overseeing $63 trillion in assets. In parallel, demographic imbalances are transforming the world’s economic centers. While Europe and China face population decline and aging, regions like Africa, the Middle East, and India are witnessing dynamic youth-driven growth, with implications for consumption, labor, and energy demand. At the same time, ideological fragmentation is accelerating. The weakening of multilateral institutions and the rise of blocs like BRICS+ reflect an increasingly multipolar world, where trade, finance, and technology are being recalibrated through strategic lenses. Deglobalization, policy unpredictability, and technological rivalry—particularly in AI—are shortening business planning cycles and complicating investment strategies. For Arab banks and financial institutions, this environment presents both challenges and opportunities. To navigate uncertainty, regional leaders must adopt agile models, prioritize risk-aware investments, and enhance strategic foresight. In an era of compressed time horizons and shifting alliances, Arab banking leadership must remain vigilant, flexible, and globally attuned to sustain relevance and influence. Dr. Joseph Torbey, Chairman - World Union of Arab Bankers
