SUGAR A large number of countries in the world produces sugar. Sugar is also an important export in many coun- tries worldwide. The top ten countries in order of the amount of overall sugar they pro- duce are Brazil, India, China, Thai- land, the United States, Pakistan, Mexico, Russia, France, and Ger- many. India was the first country to ever produce sugar. Sugar is often pro- duced from beets. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 124 countries produce sugar. Djibouti produces the least amount of sugar, whereas the South American powerhouse country of Brazil easily out-produces every country in the world in terms of sugar. The sugar industry is 80% comprised of sugarcane production. The rest of the sugar production is broken down into beet sugar, cane sugar, raw sugar, and then very small amounts of other unclassified types of sugar. The global industry of sugar manu- facturing is no longer accelerating as rapidly as it once did. Although the industry is experiencing a slight de- cline in jobs, revenue, employees, and overall production levels of sugar, the industry has gone through a dip in sales and production. It would not be surprising to find that the industry begins to take off once more in the near future. the BANKING EXECUTIVE 14 ISSUE 160 APRIL 2022 World’s Top Sugar Producers Country 2022 Population Brazil India China Thailand United States Pakistan Mexico Russia France Australia Sugar Production (tonnes) 37,300,000 26,605,000 11,474,000 10,024,000 7,666,000 6,103,000 6,021,292 5,249,339 4,692,000 4,364,000 215,353,593 1,406,631,776 1,448,471,400 70,078,203 334,805,269 229,488,994 131,562,772 145,805,947 65,584,518 26,068,792 Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), The State of Food Insecurity in the World published by FAO, World Population Prospects published by the United Nations Population Division, United Nations Statistics Division, the World Bank, the world population review, International Wheat Production Statistics – Wiki, Wheat Production - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Institute of Food Science and Technology, CIA World Factbook and Investopedia.
