The Banking Executive Magazine - July 2023 Issue
The Future of Work workday, balancing formal employ- ment with raising families and caring for those unable to care for them- selves. Activist Ai-jen Poo aptly la- bels this as the "work that makes all other work possible." With its in- creasing recognition, the definition of "enough work" must encompass both paid and unpaid labor. Next, we have the voice of youth — the younger Millennials and Gen Z workers. Raised amidst social and political upheaval, many of them re- ject the "hustle culture," choosing to prioritize their mental and physical health. Icons like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka embody this philoso- phy, asserting that self-worth should not hinge on external expectations, but should prioritize personal well- being. The rise of generative artificial intel- ligence like ChatGPT adds a new di- mension to the future of work. These technologies may disrupt traditional industrial-era work norms, prompt- ing us to reassess the "why" before the "where" and "how long" of work. As we traverse the evolving post- pandemic labor landscape, it is clear that a new discourse is emerging — one that centers the worker and their well-being, and that questions and redefines the parameters of "produc- tive work." A labor-market revolution is brewing, and we must be prepared to navigate this brave new world of work. The future of work is here, and it is shaping up to be as human-cen- tric as it is innovative. the BANKING EXECUTIVE 24 ISSUE 175 JULY 2023
